Review of my work

Representation of Power

The form of circles and spheres dominant this scheme. To me circles are intrinsically powerful because of their automatic correlation to the concept of 'infinity' but also due to their properties as a form. Circles hold a lot of value in society, as wheels, as soccer balls even as bubbles. The more value something has in society, the more powerful it is.

In respect to the model, both clients have to work through a pathway covered overheard (sheltered) by semi circles as if to indicate that the clients are central to the concept of power. Both clients, like circles, hold a lot of value in society. Circles also dominate the elevators and the dining table; power is the foundation of this scheme.

News articles (week 1)

With her electric blue eyes, brunette locks, bright smile and lithe 175cm body She threw temper tantrums, kicking and screaming until she was exhausted. Once she locked her mother in the kitchen for three hours. She was also the first eastern German to lead the country after its reunification following the fall of the Berlin Wall.

From then on she has modelled for Voodoo Dolls, Levi's, Portmans, Jets swimwear, Lisa Ho, Veet, Bonds, Peter Alexander and walked for Australian designers. She was angry. She was frustrated. She had difficulty making herself understood. Yet despite her early difficulties, she became well educated and a respected leader who fought for the rights of the deaf and blind. She formed a coalition with the pro-business Free Democrats, which in theory gave her a the chance to enact the kind of liberalizing economic plans she proposed when she first ran for chancellor in 2005.

Through touching, tasting and smelling, Helen learned a great deal about the world she could no longer see or hear. She could recognize people and their ages just by the vibrations from their footsteps on a bare floor. Rising budget deficits as a result of the economic crisis, however, have drastically limited the kind of tax cuts on which the would-be coalition partners campaigned. The catwalk's reigning brunette is changing the face of fashion with her beauty; inside and out.

Information about each Client

Helen Keller

Helen Keller; political activist, author and lecturer. From an architectural viewpoint though, the most notable thing about Helen Keller is that she is both blind and deaf. She learned through the sense of touch so when creating a space for her, visual perception must be exchanged for touch. She must walk her way through the space by feeling whats around her.

Miranda Kerr

Miranda Kerr is an Australian model and a Victoria's Secret angel. When creating a space for this client, mirrors and long walkways should be considered in order to provide a functional space for her modelling career.

Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel is a policitan, or more specifically, is the current chancellor for Germany. She's been awarded the "Vision for Europe award" due to her contribution toward a greater integrated European Union. A space for her should involve mirrors (to practice speaking), large spaces for discussions and a secret underground lair (to hide all her political dirty work).

Week three Independant Study

Stephan Hawkin's Lab is kept open so as to let him study the solar syste. More knowledge of the universe means more understanding of "why" it "bothers" to exist.

Charles Darwins Lab is designed to encourage his focus on his work. It allows him to study marine life, as well as large and small animals. The research goes on to develop his theory of evolution which encompasses the notion of "survival of the fittest".

The meeting place where the two scientist meet is designed to allow the two too not lose concentration of the environment they are researching. Their idea's on the existence of the universe and the existence of man can come together more fluidly this way.

The black Box lecture

This particular slide shares a resemblance to a part of my design; the hollow area in which Darwin can study marine life. Both juxtapose the use of light and dark to create a heightened visual experience. However, where the slide uses this concept to focus on an area of the slide, my building implements it for the purpose of allowing Darwin a clear view of the water and the creatures living within during night time. With this light he is able to study night and day on his “evolution theory”, as passionate scientists normally sacrifice sleep, food and comfort to develop their ideas and thus shouldn’t be confined due to the structures lack of functionality.

Week two independant study

This is what the model started like but I made some modifications to it so as to make it more habitable

There is a ramp from the land going up towards the structure in order to allow access for both Scientist. On Stephen Hawking's side, i've left a large open view of the sky and I've placed the building somewhere where the mountains would not block his view of space. For Darwin I've set up four cages, to allow him to study different sized animals, and a hollow ground to the water so he can study marine life.
The quotes from these two scientist can be merged to become: "There are theories to as how the universe came into existence but no one’s tried to answer the question of why. Could it be that like humans, the universe is aiming to survive? And if it is our responsibility to adapt to the changes in our surroundings then what does the universe adapt to in order to remain alive?"
